Flann OBrien, Dickens and Joyce: Form, Identity and Colonial Influences All quotations from The Third Policeman are taken from the 1993 Flamingo Modern Classic edition. In this essay I intend to examine Flann OBriens The Third Policeman in the context of the time of its writing, 1940, its relation to certain English novelistic traditions and also the broader Irish literary tradition in which it belongs. The cathedral-like structure while splendid, and the pointed satire of parody of English form suggests a literary materialism and an overwhelming desire to beat them at their own game. To install oneself and ones work in the epic tradition may well place one on the European literary map but it may also betray an anxiety which legitimates such hegemony. OBriens subversion of bildungsroman and flight into a non-realist surrealistic mode is suggestive also of a more pressing discontent with the Irish Free State and its intolerance of difference. The balloon episode functions as an allegory of a tendency to prohibit freedom and intrude upon the privacy of the individual. Iranian or Persian Whats the Difference

The terms Iranian and Persian are often used interchangeably to describe people from Iran, and some people think they mean the same thing, but is one term correct? The terms â€Å"Persian† and â€Å"Iranian† don’t necessarily mean the same thing. Some people draw a distinction in that Persian relates to a particular ethnicity, and being Iranian is a claim to a certain nationality. Thus, a person could be one without being the other. The Difference Between Persia and Iran benoitb / Getty Images Persia was the official name of Iran in the Western world prior to 1935 when the country and vast surrounding lands were known as Persia (derived from the ancient kingdom of Parsa and the Persian empire). However, Persian people within their country have long called it Iran (often spelled Eran). In 1935, the name Iran came into existence internationally and The Islamic Republic of Iran, with the boundaries in existence today, was founded in 1979 following the revolution which ousted the government of the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (1919–1980). Generally, â€Å"Persia† today refers to Iran because the country formed over the center of the ancient Persian empire and the majority of its original citizens inhabited that land. Modern Iran is comprised of a large number of different ethnic and tribal groups. People who identify as Persian account for the majority, but there are also large numbers of Azeri, Gilaki and Kurdish people, too. While all are citizens of Iran are Iranians, only some can identify their lineage in Persia. The Revolution of 1979 Citizens werent called Persian after the revolution of 1979, during which the country’s monarchy was deposed and an Islamic Republic government was put in place. The king, who was considered to be the last Persian monarch and had attempted to modernize the country, fled the country in exile. Today, some consider â€Å"Persian† to be an old term that hearkens back to the former days of monarchy, but the term still has cultural value and relevance. Thus, Iran is used in the context of political discussion, while both Iran and Persia are used in cultural context. Iran Population Composition The CIA World Factbook for 2011 pinned the ethnicity breakdown for Iran as follows: 51% Persian24% Azeri8% Gilaki and Mazandaran7% Kurd3% Arab2% Lur2% Baloch2% Turkmen1% other In 2019, ethnic percentages are not estimated, but tribes in Iran are listed as Persian, Azeri, Kurd, Lur, Baloch, Arab, Turkmen and Turkic. Official Language of Iran The official language of the country is Persian, though locally it is called Farsi. Percentages estimated in 2011 were: 58 percent of Iranians speak Persian or a  Persian dialect26 percent speak Turkic and Turkic dialects9 percent speak KurdishOthers speak Luri, Balochi, Arabic, Turkish and other languages But in 2019, no percentages were offered, but Persian (official), Azeri Turkic and Turkic dialects, Kurdish, Gilaki and Mazandarani, Luri, Balochi, and Arabic are listed. Are Persians Arabs? Persians are not Arabs. Arab people live in the Arab world made up of 22 countries in the Middle East and North Africa including Algeria, Bahrain, the Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Oman, Palestine and more. Persians live in Iran to the Indus River of Pakistan and to Turkey in the west.Arabs trace their ancestry to the original inhabitants of tribes of Arabia from the Syrian Desert and Arabian Peninsula; Persians are a part of the Iranian inhabitants.Arabs speak Arabic; Persians speak Iranian languages and dialects.

Compare and Contrast Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau Essay The Arts and Crafts movement who reacted against the new modern ways of designing in the sass and decided to reflect back to more traditional forms f both style and methods of craftsmanship in creating furniture and other household goods, including wallpapers and even tapestries. Arts and Crafts were primarily a reaction against the industrial designers like Michael Tone (1796-1871) a German designer and cabinet maker as well as Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) and Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) a Scottish designer and theories It was a reaction against industrial design in general because Arts and Crafts was opposed to the machine and its practitioners wanted to revert back to Old fashioned ways, like hand carved wood and painted furniture. They believed in simple furniture made from good quality work- almost like the work Of the Shaker group who were an anonymous religious group known for their simple ways of living and furniture design, the main difference between Shaker and Arts and Crafts was that Arts and Crafts in traditional Victorian style, liked to use decoration-. Art Nouveau was influenced by the Arts and Crafts handiwork and craftsmanship and it is something both groups share in common however Art Nouveau did not neglect using the machines available to them to help aid heir creations. Arts and Crafts did not believe in using the machine and this was heavily instilled upon the movements leader, William Morris (1834-1896) a socialist and textile designer who throughout his life had great success in most creative outlets that he would venture into. Morris was famous for his wallpapers that mostly featured motifs of nature- mostly flowers and birds as well as tapestries like Woodpecker (1885), however these designs were usually expensive and it wasnt long until Morris had decided to venture down into something else. It was common at this time that architects not only design the buildings but also the furnishings inside and this was no different to those involved in the Arts and Crafts movements practitioners like Charles F. Voyages (1857-1941) and Philip Webb (1 831-1915). Webb is probably best known for his work on Morris Red House (1860) in Bequeathal however Webb also played a significant role in creating furnishings for the House, one especially being an Oxblood Red Dresser (1860), this was made for the purpose of Morris future children but also used as a functional storage unit. Webb had also created an ebonies wood Side Board (1861) which was painted and gilt with panels postdated leather. The sideboard had brass and copper handles with floral patterns among the body and shelves of the board. As mentioned before nature was a common motif shared by most of the Arts and Crafts designers. The Arts and Crafts movement had a great deal of importance between 1850 and 1918 and went on to influence both directly and indirectly Art Nouveau designers like Charles Rennin Mackintosh (1868-1928) a Scottish designer and Architect best known for his work on the Willow Tea Rooms here he not only designed the building but also its furniture including his famous high backed chair Which he produced many times both With back splats along with other designs. It also influenced designers like French designers Rene © Illiquid (MM 945) and Hector Gummier (1867-1942). And it was Morris who particularly influenced American designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). Tiffany was especially influenced by Morris particularly in Tiffany use of nature within his works, especially flowers which played a great role in most of Tiffany glass work creations- particularly his own stained glass windows.
